Tongue and Groove Exterior Siding Gaps: What’s Normal, and the Raised vs. Flush Window Trim Debate

Are Those Gaps in Your Exterior T&G Siding Actually a Problem?

Short answer: 1/8-inch gaps in pine tongue-and-groove exterior siding are within the normal range. Pine moves with the seasons — it swells when it absorbs moisture and shrinks when it dries — so installers intentionally leave a small expansion gap so the boards don’t buckle and warp. That part of the contractor’s explanation holds up.

The more important question is what’s keeping the wall weatherproof. It isn’t the wood joints.

T&G Siding Is Not a Primary Weather Barrier

This surprises a lot of homeowners. Exterior tongue-and-groove cladding sheds most of the rain, adds some insulation value, and looks good. But the real water defense is the layer installed between the siding and the structural sheathing beneath it.

That layer is called a weather-resistant barrier, or WRB — in most installs it’s a house wrap membrane. If house wrap was correctly installed before the T&G boards went up, those gaps are not a weatherproofing failure. Rain that blows through the joints hits the WRB and drains down and out. The siding handles the bulk of the weather; the WRB handles what gets through.

No WRB, or a poorly installed one, and those gaps become a genuine problem. That’s the conversation worth having with your contractor — not the gap width itself.

Why Pine T&G Has Gaps, and How Big Is Too Big

Wood moves. Pine is particularly reactive to moisture, so boards that fit snugly in dry summer heat can buckle in a wet autumn if they have no room to expand. The recommended practice for exterior T&G is to leave a small expansion gap — around 1/8 inch is the commonly cited target, though the joint may close toward 1/16 inch in humid months and open toward 3/16 inch in dry periods. That seasonal variation is expected behavior, not a defect.

Some installers maintain the gap with plastic spacers. Others rely on the milling tolerances of the boards. When a contractor says the gaps come from “the way the boards were cut at the mill,” that’s a real phenomenon — mill tolerances vary and do affect the finished gap. It’s not necessarily a deflection.

What is worth looking at: are the gaps consistent throughout the installation, or do some joints butt tight while others open wider? Consistency suggests intentional spacing. Random wide and narrow gaps suggest boards that weren’t properly acclimated before installation, or stock that was warped or poorly milled.

Boards should ideally be left outside for a couple of weeks before install to reach equilibrium with the outdoor moisture content, and all cut ends and back faces should be primed to seal the end grain before the boards go up. End grain on pine soaks up water fast and rots quickly if left bare.

Window Trim: Raised vs. Flush — Which Is Correct?

Both approaches exist in the real world, but they aren’t equally traditional, and the choice carries aesthetic consequences that are hard to undo.

The classic approach is trim that sits proud of the siding — meaning the casing projects outward so there’s a visible step between the siding face and the face of the window trim. This is what you see on most craftsman, colonial, colonial revival, and farmhouse-style exteriors. The standard product for this is brickmold, a purpose-designed exterior casing that’s typically about 1-1/2 inches thick, giving it the mass to project past most siding materials and visually frame the window.

Flush trim — where the casing sits level with the face of the siding — is more common in contemporary and modern architecture. Clean lines, no shadow gap, deliberate minimalism. It’s a legitimate choice, but it’s a specific stylistic decision, not a default or a shortcut.

For T&G pine siding, the board thickness matters. Standard T&G is often 3/4 inch thick. If the trim stock is also 3/4 inch, it ends up flush by default. Achieving a proud look requires either thicker trim, or boards that are notched back at the window rough opening — work that has to be planned before installation, not added afterward without removing and re-running boards.

There’s also a functional consideration. Raised trim sheds water away from the joint between the siding and the casing more naturally. Flush trim relies more heavily on caulk and proper flashing to keep that seam dry. Neither is inherently wrong, but flush trim is less forgiving if the caulk fails.

Questions Worth Asking Your Contractor

Rather than debating gap measurements, these are the questions that tell you whether the installation is actually sound:

  • Is there a weather-resistant barrier — house wrap or equivalent — over the sheathing under the T&G boards?
  • Were the cut ends and back faces of the boards primed before installation?
  • Were the gaps maintained intentionally with spacers, or are they a byproduct of board variation?
  • Was the flush window trim a deliberate aesthetic decision, or a consequence of using trim stock that wasn’t thick enough to sit proud?

A wall with consistent 1/8-inch gaps and a properly installed WRB is weatherproof. A wall with tight-looking joints and no WRB is not. The siding surface is not where this question gets answered.
